COMPANY BACKGROUND: Our client is a small company focusing predominantly on immunology with the goal to markedly improve human health by integrating data, experience, and insight to enable drug discovery and development of a new generation of targeted small molecule medicines. ROLE: Immunology Project Leader. They are seeking an experienced immunologist/inflammatory disease leader with expertise in drug discovery especially though some early development experience is a plus. This person will play an important role in discovering and optimizing therapeutic candidates for first-in-human studies. This individual will devise strategy AND execute research plans through CROs while collaborating with other functional leaders internally. This position is a key part of the scientific team but without direct reports.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides leadership to cross-functional project teams and contributes to the overall inflammatory drug discovery portfolio
- Applies deep immunology expertise, together with commercial and development considerations, to evaluate and prioritize targets
- Contributes actively as a member of the scientific leadership team with responsibility for functional representation of inflammatory disease projects
- Enables robust decision making on project selection and advancement.
- Develops target candidate profiles, assay flow schemes and serves as the point person for managing pharmacology execution at CROs to support lead optimization through to clinical candidate selection.
- Expands and leverages external network for collaborations, scientific input, advice and strategy
- Works closely with CROs to execute strategy and meet project timelines, budget considerations, and decision making.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Science and/or Ph.D. is highly preferred. Bachelor’s degree with relevant work experience acceptable.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in immunology/inflammatory disease research, preferably in small or start-up environments
- Prior experience and track record of success in immunology and inflammation highly preferred, small molecule experience being a plus.
- Demonstrated ability in managing CROs, experience working with KOLs/partners would be valuable
- Extensive experience in utilizing preclinical disease modeling; including use of primary cells, ex vivo and in vivo models.
- Experience with shaping strategy and executing on projects to progress from target identification through to IND enabling studies and beyond
- Deep knowledge of inflammatory disease processes and strong understanding of treatment paradigms
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to build consensus and drive issue resolution while maintaining positive working relationships
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced hands-on research and development environment
